Birthdays are a big deal in our house because of the way I was raised. I love celebrating my daughters on their big day and surprising them with parties. We have thirteen years of birthday party experience now. As a mother of twins, I have gone over the top a few times because I felt they needed it to be extra special since they had to share their party. We have done parties at parks, had entertainers, a petting zoo, jumpers, boat rides, magicians, limo rides, Disneyland, slumber parties, glamour girl parties and of course the list goes on.
I am the first to admit that there is a point when enough is enough and sometimes the simplest birthdays are the best and most memorable. My favorite parties have been the ones that involve someone else doing the entertaining which means we can actually relax and enjoy the party and our children.
Although I hear parents sometimes comment that it costs too much to have entertainment whether they come to your house or you go to their business, I have found that often this can be the more affordable route... the entertainment becomes the focus of the party and if you plan it just right (10am-12pm or 2-4pm), you can keep the food really simple. If you do not hire entertainment, consider hiring a babysitter to assist with the activities and clean up.
