If you or someone you know intends on spending the pawliday season giving or receiving the gift of a puppy or adult dog, then have you come to the right resource!

Poncho and I have a few quick tips for those who are in pet-parent-to-be mode, and we'd like to share them with you. For additional information to help ease this transition, please check out our inquisitive canine dog training tips blog. 

1. Gather the necessities. Keep basic supplies at the ready, including a collar with ID, food, water bowl and leash. 
2. Ensure health and well-being. Line up outside resources, including a veterinarian, optional petsitter, groomer, walker and certified trainer. 
3. Make it a home-sweet-home. Decide on and establish areas for sleeping, lounging, playing, alone time and going potty. 
4. Create a task chart. Delegate responsibilities for all who’ll be caring for the dog - including the kids!
5. Practice consistency. Teach where and how you want your dog to be, making sure all involved are on board and in sync.
6. Establish a quality relationship. Spend time getting to know your dog, allowing him or her to settle in at his or her own pace. Be patient, communicating to your new companion what an important part of your life and family he or she is, and that you can be trusted. You’ll be your dog’s new best friend, and vice versa.
